Ajmer City Guide
Ajmer was a premier city of northern India during the heyday of tis chauhan rajmer-rajasthan-indiaulers but after thir downfall it become vulnerable to the sinister design of the vying potentiates both far and near who contended for its acquisition and retention peace eluded it for nearly three and a half, centuries till it was incorporated in the mughal empire by akbar.

Historically, Ajmer always had great strategic importance and was sacked by Mahumud of Ghazni on one of his periodic forays from Afghanistan. Later it became a favorite residence of the great Moghula. One of the first contacts between the Moghula and the British occurred in Ajmer when Sir Thomas Roe met with Jahangir here in 1616. The city was subsequently taken by the Scindias and, in 1818, it was handed over to the British, becoming one of the few places in Rajasthan controlled directly by British rather than being part of a princely state.

Ajmer has a great position in Rajasthan Tourism. Ajmer is a well-known destination and famous as a Muslim Pilgrimage centre. When you will come for tours to Rajasthan and explore Ajmer you will see several attractions here. The major attraction of Ajmer is Dargah Sharif, the Tomb of famous Muslim Sufi Saint Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti. The Dargah Sharif is very popular among Muslim communities. But it is also revered by Hindus as well as Muslims.

Originally called Ajaimeur or the invincible hill, founded by Ajai Pal Chauhan in the 7th century, Ajmer was a centre of Chauhan power till 1193 A.D. Even during the Muslim conquests, Ajmer did not loose its charm and importance. It was only when Prithvi Raj Chauhan lost to Muhammed Gohri that Ajmer passed on to multiple hands of feudal lords, Marwar rulers and finally the Mughals. Eventually, Ajmer was conquered by the Marathas, who subsequently lost it to the British and it became one of the only parts of Rajasthan controlled directly by the East Indian Co.

After independence in 1947, Ajmer retained its position as a centrally administrated state under a Chief Commissioner for some time. Ajmer was eventually merged with the State of Rajasthan. In this era of communalism and religious intolerance, Ajmer comes across as an extremely secular town and a unifying shrine. Ajmer is renowned for the Shrine dedicated to the Muslim saint lovingly known as Khwaja who longed to unite the people of the land in a common bond or brotherhood.
