Jaisalmer City Guide
Jaisalmer stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone in midst of vast Thar Desert. The city is crowded with massive forts, palace and Jain temples. Jaisalmer is popularly called ad the "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand gives a yellowish-golden hue to the city and its surrounding area. Sonar Quila or Golden Fort is the major landmark of Jaisalmer. The desert city of Jaisalmer is also famous for thrilling sand dunes and exciting camel safaris. The city is very rich in its culture and heritage. Jaisalmer is located in very remote from main transportation access but is famous for many artistic structures and monuments of local historical importance.

The city has an interesting legend associated with it, according to which, Lord Krishna-the head of the Yadav Clan, foretold Arjuna that a remote descendent of the Yadav Clan would built his kingdom atop the Trikuta Hill. His prophecy was fulfilled in 1156 A.D. when Rawal Jaisal, a descendent of the Yadav Clan and a Bhatti Rajput, abandoned his fort at Lodurva and founded a new capital - Jaisalmer, perched on the Trikuta Hill.

Bahti Rajputs of Jaisalmer were feudal chiefs who lived off the forced levy on the caravans laden with precious silks and spices that crossed the territory enroute Delhi-or-Sind. These caravans earned the town great wealth.

While Jaisalmer may always have been remote, it is filled with many artistic structures and monuments of local historical importance. Jaisalmer's medieval mud fortress and walled township make it a popular tourist destination. The surrounding desolate landscape evidences a stark, austere beauty. Camel safaris through the nearby desert dunes are popular with tourists .

Jaisalmer exercises immense charm, but with the staging of the annual Desert Festival (January - February), it has also become one of the annual calendar. Essentially, it is a showcase of the region on the desert citadel. A number of amusing events at the stadium include turban tying competitions and camel races.
