The town of Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan, is located at an elevation of 1220 meters. It has been a popular retreat from the heat of Rajasthan. Mount Abu was once a part of the Chauhan kingdom of Rajasthan and served as a summer resort for the Rajput kings of the region. After that, it was leased by the British government from the then Maharaja of Sirohi for use as the headquarter of the resident to Rajputana (another name for Rajasthan). Being very close to Gujarat, it is a popular summer resort built around a lake and surrounded by thick woods and hills. It is said that the place was named after Arbuda, a serpent who descended to the spot to rescue Shiva's bull, Nandi. Besides the famous temples and other archeological remains, there are fascinating treks and picnic spots, romantic retreats of various erstwhile royal families of Rajputana and some remnants of the Raj period. Weirdly shaped gigantic rocks, lovely lakes and cool climate make Mt Abu a unique place in the arid desert land of the Thar.

Mount Abu has been home to many sages and saints. Most famous of them was Sage Vashishtha who is believed to have created four agnikula Rajput clans from a fire-pit by performing a ‘yagna’ or fire sacrifice, to protect the earth from the demons. Legend has it that all the 330 million gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon used to visit this holy mountain. It is also the place where the great saint Vashishth lived and performed a yagna (sacrificial worship on a fire pit) to create four Agnikula (four clans of fire) to protect the earth from demons. The yagna was supposed to have been performed near a natural spring, which emerged from a rock shaped like a cow's head. This place is held in reverence by Jains as well since Jain scriptures record that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankar (spiritual leader), also visited Mount Abu and blessed the city.

It is not only one of the prettiest hill stations in the country, but a major Rajput and Jain pilgrimage center. The legend goes that a 'yagna' was performed here and four Agnikula or fireborn Rajput clans the Chauhans, Parmaras, Pratiharas and Solankis were created out of fire.

Till 11th century, Mount Abu was an important Vaishnav and Shiva pilgrimage center, but now it has gained importance as a Jain pilgrim center.

Train : Nearest railhead is Abu Road (27 kms).
    Air : Nearest airports are Udaipur and Ahmedabad.
Road : Regular buses connect Mount Abu with Abu Road, Achalgarh, Ahmedabad, Ranakpur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Abu Road. Taxis and Jeeps are available from Abu Road to Mount Abu.
