Situated at a short distance of 11 kms, from Jaipur, the Amer Fort complex stands amidst wooded hills overlooking the Delhi-Jaipur highway, with its forbidding ramparts reflected in the still waters of the Maota Lake below. One of the finest examples of Rajput architecture, it was the ancient capital of the Kachhawah rulers. The original palace was built by Raja Man Singh and additions were made later by Sawai Jai Singh. Within the palace are the Diwan-e-Aam or the "Hall of Public Audience", the Diwan-e-Khas or the "Hall of Private Audience" and the Sukh Niws where a cool breeze blows across channels of water for the purpose of air-conditioning.

According to popular belief, the town was originally labeled as ‘Ambikishwara’, other name of Lord Shiva. ‘Ambikishwara’ later got abridged as ‘Ambiner’ and even further as ‘Amber’. Built in 16 the century by Raja Man Singh, the Amber Fort standing majestically over sprawling lawns upholds a history which classically explains the life and times of the chivalrous Rajputs – belligerent, audacious, impetuous and hedonistic. In 1592, construction of the Fort was commenced by Raja Man Singh I. However, the Fort took its present form during the reign of Raja Jai Singh .

Amber Fort stands perched on a small hill overlooking Lake Maotha. The fort, built with white marble and sandstone, features more than a millitary command post. With its luxurious interiors the fort is par excellence. The outer walls, that stands erected to safeguard the interiors, are more rugged and craggy looking. There are enormous gateways, palace halls, pavilions and stairways housed within the fort complex.

The architecture of the Amber Fort is a wonderful example of the Rajput and Mughal style. The Amer fort is built in red sandstone and white marble. The entrance to the fort is through the Suraj Pol which opens into the Jaleb Chowk, the main courtyard. Amongst the most prominent structures inside the Amer fort is the Diwan-i-Aam or the Hall of Public Audience. The hall is adorned with latticed galleries and double row of columns. The top of the columns are each shaped like an elephant. There is also the Ganesh Pol with beautiful painted image of Lord Ganesh and jaliwork. The mirror work is extraordinary in the Sheesh Mahal which according to its name glows with thousands of pieces of mirror. The moment a ray of sun or moon falls on these mirrors, the entire palace begins to radiate.

The Shila Mata Temple devoted to Shila Mata (Goddess Kali, goddess of victory) is yet another attraction of Amber Fort. The temple lodges a black marble idol of the goddess brought here by Raja Man Sigh in 1604 from Jessore. Nine images of Goddess Durga (strength) and ten forms of Goddess Saraswati (knowledge) are elegantly carved on the silver gates of the temple. The mandap of this temple is erected in white marble in contrast to the colors of the idols. Amber fort is a magnificent fort crafted in a picturesque backdrop. A consummate mélange of Hindu and Muslim architecture, Amber Fort attracts travelers from around the globe. Brilliantly caparisoned elephants carry visitors to and fro making their ride to Amber fort an enthralling experience.
